..each individual is an evolutionary path for the human species
- all descended from a primordial soup of bio-organic molecules
- brought to this planet from the stars.. the elements which make up each and everyone of us
- in the vast stretch of eternity – we are but dusts in a bottomless ocean
- there is no point in putting up with poverty… or violence for that matter – that’s the easy way out
- logic, reason law does not imply that we deny our emotions – what it does is to keep us grounded – and protect us from ourselves – for our strengths may also be the same weaknesses that can bog us down -
- at the same time emotions allow us to experience what it means to be human – to be in love, to be sad, to be happy, to be miserable, to be victorious, to be calm and peaceful.. contented..
- we all have come to this location in space and time because of our commonalities..our humanity does not preclude us from pursuing excellence – it actually drives our pursuit for that which is noble, which is compassionate – starting with ourselves..
to leave this world a better place – than when we first came in ..
wherever we may be..
seize the moment – for we shall never pass this way again..
we walk this path.. not because it is easy.. .but because it is hard..
and in the process – discover more of ourselves and climb mountains and scale peaks.. we fell many times and we rose many times more..
- and so as we go through this journey called life.. having fellow travelers makes it .. a joy..
I salute you all>>

***

we will retain the tavern as an open group… the sanctum – is the next domain in the evolution of the AP memes and explorations into the Pinoy psyche -

the dysfunctionality is all ours… we embrace it.. we learn from it… we mold it… we reshape it… discard it.. replace it… and grow… all of it boils down to a choice – answerable by yes.. or no..

one more thing – respect begets respect – making your POV known does not mean that others have to agree with you or me. life is not a contest – it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon – we all finish at different times.-

we can all disagree without being disagreeable. life is too short to make enemies.. make friends – build relationships – rebuild the Philippines – it all starts and ends with each individual.
…

to freedom – cheers!

Welcome to the Philippines; a country rich in politicking thieves who get re-elected over and over, people who imbibe backwater remedies sold without clinical trials, fearful religious who jump from one congregation that don’t give evidence for its claims to another equally ridiculous congregation with the same modus with a different branding. Some have implied gullibility is in the Filipino gene. While we are truly constrained by our biology, it is the detrimental memes, the bad ideas that spread linguistically and culturally that contribute to gullibility. I’d like to extend Chino F’s seminal piece “Filipino Family Values: A Source of Dysfunction“, which covered the bad of the bad of Filipino families since it overlooked one thing: The Filipino brand of parenting impairs a child’s thinking ability.

The foundation of our society starts at home and boy, what an authoritarian home it is. Parents force their children to conform to ideas they subscribe to, since parents are the children of authoritarian homes, too. In many ways, Filipino parents are fond of “believe it, do it because I told you so” rather than explaining the reason behind the instruction. Parents insist on conformity so much they respond with hostility when children ask questions. Children grow up mentally hobbled, meet other people with the same hobble and learn from teachers who had similar rearing. Children have more exposure to “believing and following” than “thinking”. It’s like children are not future adults.

Parents seem to use authoritarian methods as a short cut for keeping their parental authority unchallenged. Cui bono? The predator that will suck the life right out of their victims; it may be the slime planning to grab some taxpayer money or the bad idea that causes irreversible damages to our well being.

Children are born with the biological impetus for curiosity and inquiry. When parents equate love and good parenting with children who meekly swallow all ideas fed by their mamas and papas, let’s not wonder why we have built a society chock-full of airhead politicos in office, glorified pseudo-scientific remedies, evangelical con men and people who are too easily duped.

No, we don’t have to make “pasabog” of their offices para maibsan ang galit natin. Let’s just support free trade and the abolition of the 60-40 protectionism in the Consti thru constitutional amendment or revision. This way, sasabog at sasabog ang mga companies na ‘to.

But why is South Korea internet the fastest on earth? Tayo kulelat. According to this article, “Korean competition.”

“Countries with fast, cheap Internet connections tend to have more competition.”

Why competition? It’s because South Korea has 29 competing internet service providers (as of 2002) fiercely competing with each other.

Dito ilan ba?

Nakaka-buwisit pa yang Wi-Tribe na yan. Imagine, 24 month holding period? Kabobohan yan! Sinong loko-loko ang papasok sa 24-month HP? If they want to attract more subscribers, 3-month holding period is fair and OK.

This is the best opportunity and time for Globe and Wi-Tribe na magpakitang gilas habang disappointed tayong lahat sa PLDT-Smart-Sun service.

P.S.: Internet connection is fast in SK not because of its parliamentary system. Baka may sisingit diyan. Key word: Competition! Capisce???

Self-interest is the morality in business. Well, self-interest is what motivates consumers too. We want a certain product because it has value to us. But heck! Why do we hate and reject bad/poor services? It’s because of self-interest.

For …instance, it’s IRRATIONAL self-interest that motivates Wi-Tribe to stick with its hilarious, annoying 24-month holding period. But it’s self-interest that tells us not to sign an adhesive contract.

If Wi-Tribe is so SELFISH, it would have thought that 3-month holding period and better service is what it needs. Real, RATIONAL selfishness is what it needs. You can’t be selfish if you’re in a business of cheating on or taking advantage of other people. That’s self-destructive! Thus, if Wi-Tribe wants to attract more subscribers, it should have drop its ridiculous 24-month HP and improve its services. This is the real essence of SELFISHNESS in business. But if it stubbornly sticks with its current business plan, that’s SELF-DESTRUCTION!

By Mitos Habana Magsaysay

Gusto kong hiramin ang pananalita ni Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda: ” if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear. So what are you afraid of?”

Isang hiling lang po, sana po you practice what you preach.

The financial crisis of 2009 really hit home hard for me and my family. I was the sole bread winner and once the base of the house is damaged, the house of cards tumbles down. Our financial state is similar to a house of cards built solely on one foundation, my paycheck as a worker abroad. Being jobless for 6 months has depleted our financial resources very badly pushing it to the negative side. I was very fortunate to have my little brother bail me out of the horrible situation. I have read stories of some people who kill themselves when in the same situation, thankfully I didn’t. I actually did not give it much attention back then. It is now when I am paying the aftermath of that event that I am feeling the brunt of it all. 18 months have passed, and the debts are still there. Looking at the bright side of it, the financial crisis and my being jobless for 6 months is the best thing that ever happened to my life’s financial aspect. My financial mindset is now facing 180 degrees and is moving forward.

A bunch of these me likes!

Reading has been an annoyance for me. I couldn’t stand reading a lot, I fall asleep. I am changing though, bit by bit as most of the goodies for financial education is already written. Partially thanks to YouTube a lot are also available for viewing. From all this reading I came out with a plan. It’s not as detailed, but I would like to record it so I can reflect on it, hone it and maybe even help others.

List – Make an excel sheet of the cash flow for each month and record every purchase and expenditure. This is the single most important thing that I and my wife ever did. Knowing how much is needed and where every peso is allocated goes a long way. It gives a record of previous activities and gives a perspective of what lies ahead.

Repay DEBT

Remove debt as soon as possible. Concentrate on those debts which have the highest interest like credit cards, bank loans, 5-6 or and the likes. Throw everything you got on those interest ridden debts until they are nil. If you have debts pay them, even if takes quite a while, the important thing is you pay them. The debt you owe your brother or a friend can wait since these don’t have interests, but be sure to talk to them as assurance that you will pay them. Be sure to thank them dearly for it. A simple thank you goes a long way. It is too much of a loss to destroy a relationship over money, so even if you are friends or relatives PAY YOUR DEBT. Relationships are more important than money!

Build an emergency fund – an emergency fund big enough to sustain me and my family for one year. This fund must not be touched, used or accessed except in the worst scenario. This is where the savings goes in no matter how small. As time passes by it builds up.

Start a small project – in my case, we started a small pig farm from the piece of land I bought a couple of years ago. This, should be something that will have a potential money making aspect, but the most important thing is you like to do it and it interest you. It should be small so as not to affect your financial status. Build upon it, study it and don’t rush it.

Live Frugally – If you earn 4,000 a month live like you only earn 3,000. 25% of your income should be saved if possible. In this way you can build up your emergency fund in no time. No matter how hard it is or how small it is, save money! Start with 1% and gradually increase it.

Learn how to cook and eat fresh – Cooking your own food is cheaper and you are sure of what you are eating. Eating fresh means buying food grown locally which are in season, not only are they fresh, chemicals were not used to induce ripening on fruits or veggies.

Save more, and then invest- saving more gives you more ammunition to establish your passive income generating endeavors. You can use this extra savings to establish a business or invest them in stocks. One can even invest on themselves. Acquiring new skills through education and training most likely will increase your professional value. In my case I am planning to take a Project management course and ISO training within this year. It’s not cheap but I know the certificates and knowledge I will get from these will give me an edge in the coming years.

Getting out of debt takes time. It takes even more time to build one’s financial machinery to become self sufficient. No matter how hard this seems to be, it starts with you. That decision to take over your financial sail to steer yourself to financial freedom is the first and most important decision one can make. This is the start. This is my template. It is my general plan. It may fail but it may also succeed, the important thing is that I have a plan which I can work with. It can be modified as needed. All the decision I make will be mine and I have to be responsible, my family depends on it.

Anyone has the right to file any resolution in congress, same way as anyone has the right to file in the office of the Ombudsman or in the courts. Are they now curtailing the rights of anyone who wants to seek the truth? Do they want to make it clear to the public that under their administration, they employ a double standard of justice, one for friends and one for foes?

In their mind, its ok to malign your foes through trial by publicity but not your friends even though the Lagman resolution stems off from the recommendation of your own DOJ. The minority does not have to concoct negative issues against the administration as they are doing a good job of doing so themselves. In the words of your own spokesman, Lacierda: ”if you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to fear. So what are you afraid of”.

Mr. President, whatever happened to transparency , accountability, and daang matuwid that you promised all of us of?

Orion posted a YouTube video (apparently a video footage of him talking about his “parliamentary” idiocy) with the following wish:

“I’m hoping that whatever misconceptions people may have about the parliamentary system can be addressed by this episode.”
…
*Facepalm* and *LMAO!*

I don’t think his pathetic, hilarious YouTube video could ever change anyone’s so-called “misconception” about his parliamentary BS.

I believe it is Orion who needs to conduct some serious college research about this issue. But first, this is what Orion needs to do:

1. To learn and understand the difference and relationship between form/STRUCTURE of government and political system;

2. T know which came first in Singapore: Lee Kuan Yew or parliamentary system.

3. To understand the proper concept of form/structure of government and its relation to political system.

4. To understand the indispensable influence of political system on the political and economic direction of a nation.

5. To understand whether it is possible to achieve economic prosperity and stability under any form of government without establishing FIRST the principles of individual rights and the institutions of economic freedom.

6. To know and understand the source or basis of a nation’s “collective” culture. Is it a nation’s basic moral premises or some other factors?

7. To identify what primarily sets or establishes the practical concept of limited government- is it the adopted political system or form of government.

8. When it comes to the PHILOSOPHY OF LAW, which should come first- political system or form/structure of government?

9. To study and understand the history of most empires and “great” governments in the past. Did they fail or succeed because of their ALLEGED form/STRUCTURE of government (and this is the MORONIC view of pseudo-political intellectual Orion)? Did the Weimar Republic fail because of its ‘somehow’ problematic parliamentary system or it failed because of STATISM/COLLECTIVISM?

10. To learn a lot of things about econlib and Austrian economics.

These are my friendly unsolicited advice to Orion. PEACE!

By Butch Ruiz Baliao

I was not influenced by anybody. Neither by Froilan Vincent nor by Paul Farol. However, I will admit that I made my decision to completely abandon my pro-parliamentary stand after PARTLY reading Froilan’s article and reading FULLY Arnel Endrinal’s article and then LISTENING to Paul’s arguments. At the onset, may I just point out that my change of heart happened a day BEFORE Sen. Enrile made his pronouncements so I cannot therefore be accused of “just going with the tide”.

Briefly, I developed my own preference for Federalism since 1989 when I invited former Senator John Osmena to visit Tuguegarao which was then a municipality under Mayor Delfin Ting, a very good friend of mine, who incidentally, is now the incumbent city mayor. I was actually clueless that in his speech, I would, for the first time, hear about Federalism from Sen. Osmena which immediately caught my interest. Since then, I had been espousing a Federal form of government for the country. However, i think my mistake was to equate Federalism with Parliamentary form. All the while, I believed that the best way towards Federalism was through a Unicameral or Parliamentary form of government. Partly true but unfortunately, I overlooked a historical fact that even if it was not REAL, we actually already had a Parliament during Marcos’ time (as pointed out rightly or wrongly by Froilan in his article), although fake, but for whatever it is worth, it gave me an idea that given the same, and perhaps had even become worse, political psyche of the nation, a Parliamentary form of government may just as fail. Why? Because I share with Paul Farol’s view that Parliament will have the same people we have in our present legislature, contrary to Arnel Endrinal’s view that it will produce better leaders. Hence, another rubber-stamp parliament, similar to Marcos’, is not unlikely to rise again.

I have no serious problem with a Parliamentary form but for it to be effective in the country, we must first raise the political education of our people. For how quick and how long, only God knows. That’s why i said ” IT’S TOO EARLY”. On the other hand, given our history under Marcos and then Cory where and when we missed both chances to have a Singaporean model in both form and leadership, which to me could have been the best for the country, where it resulted into a deep-rooted and well-entrenched national political psyche that will be difficult to break, i said, “IT’S TOO LATE”.

While I agree with CoRRECT’s 1&2 points agenda, I believe that the best way to advance them is to leave it to Congress to determine which areas in the economy it wants to open to 100% foreign ownership, which again, is Paul’s view I share. Furthermore, I believe it is also important for us to fix first our own local industries before exposing them to foreign competition. Personally, however, for as long as we can afford and control it, I would prefer to allow 100% ownership to foreign companies that only engage in exports.

Admittedly, I believe it is ideal that aside from Economic Liberalization, the political form should also be included in a future constitutional reform. But due to Sen. Enrile’s recent pronouncements, I would rather that we focus on economic issues first so as not to antagonize our legislative leaders that could blow even our chances for economic reforms. Besides, a Parliamentary shift could have been doomed already by Sen. Enrile’s pronouncements which may actually result to limiting proposed amendments to just the economic provisions in the official forum, whether it is through a ConCon or a ConAss.

However, limitations notwithstanding, I think there is actually a chance to hit two birds with one stone when we are already in the formal debates and deliberations. Consistent with my preference for Federalism, a subtle way to inject said principle into the constitution is to empower the Regions by exactly leaving the matter of the economy to the Congressmen. That way, the Regions’ individual dreams and aspirations can be pushed and advanced. That way, too, we would have effectively decentralized the government and decapitated imperial Manila. That way also, we will have less government and less people to govern and handle.

After reading posts at the GRP group and skimming through Orion’s pathetic college research papers, I came to the following conclusion…

These (GRP) people don’t understand the relation between history, economics and politics. They are the ‘ignoramuses” classical liberal economist Ludwig von Mises warned us about. They take history out of context.

For instance, they can now see that Singapore is progressive. They learned through a little bit of research that Singapore applies a parliamentary form of government. Thus, they concluded that Singapore became an economic power in Asia because of parliamentary system, disregarding the fact that it applied such a system long before Lee Kuan Yew became PM. They also fail to understand that it was economic liberalization and a higher degree of economic freedom that made Singapore economically stable despite being the most indebted country in Asia.

They are also the kind of clueless people Henry Hazlitt warned us about in his book “Economics in One Lesson”. They tend to look at the immediate impact of a political policy or any issue.

For instance, Orion spent a great deal of time analyzing the “collective” culture of this country and then made a so hilarious a conclusion that parliamentary system fits into our Filipino collective culture. LMAO! Nakakatawa ang kanyang kabobohan haha!

My take is, any economic system will work on any economic setting so long as the political system implemented respects man’s freedom and individual rights. For instance, the principles of freedom and individual rights will not apply in a ultra conservative Islamic country like Iran. So long as a society embraces these principles, the institutions of economic freedom and free market system are possible and applicable.
